Quick, Easy DIY Farmhouse Picture Frames

March 23, 2020 by momandherblog1 Leave a Comment

Check out these cute DIY farmhouse picture frames my daughter and I made! My daughter loved them so much she told me they were going in her room. Win for me!

I thought a love theme would go great in a young girls room, plus they were made with nothing but love from her momma! This could also make a really cute spring project.  Of course, if you are a boy mom and looking for something to decorate in a more boyish way there are also plenty of stencils you can pick online according to what they like. This doesn’t just have to be a girls project.

So, I have never made these before so no prior experience is need. My daughter wasn’t able to help me much with these DIY Farmhouse picture frames (she was only able to hold things and tape here and there). So, I had her work her own project, which is so good for her independence and confidence. I try to do a lot of projects with her but sometimes doing separate projects together is just as fun. We both want to get our yard ready for spring. So, she decided to decorate a birdhouse for outside while I made these pictures. Check out her side project here (birdhouse).

Supply List:

Wood dowels-

Using this size dowel with the type/size paper noted below match perfectly (no cutting/ wood saw required)

Mixed Media paper

Staple gun w/staples

This staple gun comes with staples and a staple remover. 😊

Twine

So many uses for this twine! You will definitely see this twine again in other projects! I originally went to big (circumference) on the original twine I purchased for this project. Keep in mind you will need to staple the twine to the wood dowel – don’t purchase thick twine (like I did)! The above twine would be perfect for this project.

  • Scissors ( purchase at any craft store location)
  • Wood stain (only if you want to stain the dowels). I personally did not stain the dowel rods. I liked the natural wood color.
  • Stencils- Amazon has so many cute stencils! The stencil pack I picked is currently now unavailable, but I found these stencils and they are adorable! Wish I found them first. (Pictured below)
  • Acrylic Paint (and/or spray paint) (if you don’t have any here is a link- picture below. I picked the below set of Acrylic paints as It has a variety of different colors to use on multiple different projects)-
  • Paint brush ( I used the foam paint brush and I bought a pack of 4. My daughter loves to paint and I didn’t want to worry about re-purchasing supplies. 4 foam brushes should last at awhile if they are reused.
  • Double sided tape (purchased at any craft store location), or you can just fold tape on itself to make it double sided, either works.

Directions- how to make these Farmhouse Picture Frames:

Take the stencil of choice put double sided tape on the side that goes against the paper ( so the stencil does not move when painting/ or spraying)

Prepping for paint - stencil lined up over paper
  • If you want to stain the wood dowels- do this first.
  • Pick the color paint or spray paint. For paint you want to just paint in the blank cut out spaces of the stencil. Just use enough paint to cover the white paper ( you don’t want to saturate the paper). If you opt for the spray paint method spray the entire page. Again use sparingly, but enough to cover the white of the paper.
  • Let dry
  • Once wood dowels are dry – staple about 12-18 inches of twine to either side of a wood dowel.
  • Once paper is dry, line the edge of the paper up with the wood dowel and staple to the dowel. Do this to the top and bottom of the paper. You will then have your finished project ready to hang! See below for our finished product:

The center picture (Love you to the moon and back) was done using spray paint (shade of deep red and rose gold). However, other two were done using acrylic paint and a paint foam paint brush. To get a more rustic look with the paint you can intentionally leave some white inside the stencil area. One other thing I tried with the pictures is I used more then one color in each picture. The colors were similar so they didn’t contrast too much, but I think it adds some additional character to the pictures. 🙂

I did this one last picture to hang in my upstairs bathroom ( see below).

You can also check out Joanna Gaines tutorial on this project. She has some really great printables instead of the DIY art I show here. Just another option for y’all. Here is the link to this project- HERE

If you don’t have time to create your own art, you can also get FREE access to my Resource Library with all the art printables, which would be perfect for this project. Just hop on over to my Resource Page and sign up to get access – HERE

Please be sure to comment and let me know if you tried to make these DIY Farmhouse Picture frames! Super easy and adds a lot of character to home décor. I do try to reuse the craft supplies needed in my other craft projects. So don’t worry these supplies won’t go to waste. If you subscribe to my mailing list you won’t miss any of these projects!
