What is a Succulent?
Succulents are plants with engorged leaves, stems and sometimes both to store water.
Soil Type – Caring for Succulents
Soil type is the most important factor in raising healthy succulents. Succulents grow best in soil that has great air flow and allows for quick draining/ drying soil. Therefore, the best soil for succulents or transplanting succulents is either cactus soil or succulent soil. I highly recommend only using these two soil types it will make a huge difference in the growth of your succulent plants! I’ve learned first hand soil type is key when growing succulents. Something else you can do to increase soil drainage – before transplanting your succulent make a gravel layer in the bottom of the pot you are transplanting the succulent into. The gravel will allow for more air flow and water drainage.
Succulents like to have plenty of water, but don’t like their roots to sit in wet soil for any length of time. Their roots will actually start to rot if they remain wet for a length of time. So, that is why cactus soil or succulent soil is so important. Before watering your succulents test the soil to make sure it is dry. You don’t need to water succulents if the soil is still damp or wet. On average watering succulents every 7-10 days is more ideal. However this can vary depending on the environmental temperature. When in doubt, It’s best to hold off on watering succulents then to over water. Succulents hold water in their leaves and can bounce back quickly if they are slightly under watered. If they are over watered they develop root rot and can get diseases.
Glass Containers
If you are new to raising succulents I recommend staying away from glass containers that don’t have any drainage. Because glass traps moisture and doesn’t create a healthy succulent growing environment I recommend staying away from this type of planter for succulents if you are a new succulent owner.
Sunlight and Temperature
The amount of sunlight you give your succulent depends greatly on the type of succulents you own. Some succulents prefer all day indirect sunlight while other succulents, such as cacti, can tolerate direct sunlight all day. If your succulent is exposed to to much heat and sun it can suffer from a condition known as being “sunburned.” As a general rule of thumb succulents with fleshy engorged leaves will be content with morning sun and shade during the hottest part of the day. Cacti and spiny succulents can withstand direct sun all day. If you are trying to grow less sun tolerant succulents in direct sun for most of the day consider watering them more frequently.
Steps to Take When Transplanting Succulents Indoors
When you first buy your succulent from the plant nursery they usually have succulents in soil that is way too thick and retains too much water for the liking of succulent plants. Transplant them immediately! So, make sure you get soil as mentioned above – very important. Try to get as much of the nursery soil off the root system of the succulent. You can even go through the root system and clip off any roots that look rotted with scissors.
Now it’s time to put the succulent in the pot. I would recommend putting a small gravel layer in the bottom of your pot to help with the water drainage. Then fill the rest with the succulent soil, leaving enough space to plant the succulent and the root system into the dirt. Fill in the remaining space with the succulent soil. If you would like to add an additional decorative touch you can leave a small space at the top of the pot and put decorative pebbles on top of the soil.

Inspirational Home Decor with Succulents
Inspirational home decor with succulents – the fun part! There are so many ways to decorate your home with succulents. But, today I will be just going over my top 5 ways to decorate with Succulents-
- The pot you use to transplant your succulents into makes all the difference. As for the farmhouse style I am absolutely in love with these three potters ( click on the pictures to get full details on potters for purchase)
I recently purchased the first two potters for my farmhouse. I have one on my mantle and one in my tray decor on my living room table. They go so well with my decor and add to the cozy home feeling. Not to mention I found it therapeutic to do some indoor gardening while waiting for the weather to warm up so I can garden outside again.
Here are my succulents:
2. Another type of planter that I just adore for the farmhouse look is using bird cages as pots for succulents. Now you may have to add drainage holes or ensure a good sized drainage layer with gravel ( if the bird cage you select does not have proper drainage). But these bird cages really caught my eye and would look great either at the end of a mantle, as part of a decorative tray in the living/dining room, or in the foyer/entry way of any home.
3. For the rustic farmhouse look these wood planters would go perfect. Again, these would look good as a center piece on a dining/living room table or even on the entryway/foyer table.
4. Terrarium planters can be so much fun and add a dynamic eye-appealing touch to your home decor. There is such a variety in options when it comes to terrariums. You can do bird cage terrariums, driftwood style terrariums, miniature hanging terrariums… and the list goes on!
5. Hanging planters- EEEEK! I love hanging planters! They are so great to add in the kitchen window or by a window that gets some great sunlight. Here are some inspirational ideas:
