With Easter right around the corner and plenty of time on my hands ( social distancing myself and child) and also needing a project to keep the little one entertained. I decided to take on a craft project with bright Easter pastels colors. I really have fallen in love with the seasonal gnomes this year so I figure why not create a bright and fun Easter Bunny Gnome?! I really couldn’t be happier with how they came out. Here is a quick how to on how to create your own Easter Bunny Gnome.
I didn’t want to spend a lot of money on supplies for this project so I used some things I already had at home for this project. For example: My daughter has pink pantyhose that she has grown out of. I used these for the gnomes hat. I have several pair of socks that don’t have the matching pair. I used two tall black socks that lost the matching pair for the body of the gnome. I also had some left over lace from an old project that I decided to use to add a more feminine touch to the genomes hat. So if you want to try this project figure out what you have at home that may work instead of going out to the store to buy unless you absolutely have to. Somethings I did have to purchase. All items needed for this project are listed below.
Glue gun and hot glue
Tall socks- I used black, but the color choice here is yours.
Dried/uncooked Lentils or Rice.
Pom Pom balls
Pastel multicolor fur
A multicolor feather boa trim, and a white feather boa trim ( these feather boa’s are smaller and have wispy like feathers). The trim boa’s are better suited for this project. You don’t want to have large boa feathers taking over your project. 🙂
String
Bunny ears from a headband
Flower details ( not required but adds a nice touch to the overall decoration)
I will add links to the above items to purchase to make it easier in the near future. However most of these items can be found at the dollar store, and hobby lobby or you might already have them in your home.
My daughter and I ended up making two Easter Bunny Gnomes ( one smaller and one larger).
Start out by taking your sock and fill it with uncooked Lentils or rice. Once you have the correct size gnome you want tie off the top of the sock with a knot. You can then cut the leftover sock off. Then tie some string around where you would want the head portion of the gnome. Once done it should look like this:
Use hot glue to attach the nose.
Cut one full let of the pantyhose and place it over the head of the gnome ( don’t worry about any extra at this point. It should look like this:
I then added a lace detail with hot glue to the edge of the pantyhose over the top of the nose wrapping around the gnome. (picture shown below)
Cut about a half inch of the panty hose on top of the head of the gnome so the ears can be hot glued to the top of the head. I opted to do this gnome with floppy ears. So I used the feather boa trim ( multicolored). I made a U shape with the boa and hot glued and tied with string the ends together to make each ear. Once the ears were made I hot glued the end to the top of the head of the gnome. As shown here:
Then hot glue the 1/2 inch hole you made closed. It won’t be perfect but don’t worry! No one will see it. Hot glue a flower detail or bow to the top of the head where this cut was made.
At this point you can determine how long you want the hat. Cut the length of the hat and tie the end off with a knot. If you have extra fabric you can always add a little extra detail to the tip ( after the knot) and cut several small slices in the fabric leaving the fabric after the knot to curl and twist ( see final picture)
You will then need to hot glue the fur to the underside of the neck area ( where you tied the string to separate the body from the head. As shown below:
The only differences between the two gnomes is how we did the ears and details on the top of the head. We took the ears off a $1 headband and hot glued them to the top of the gnome ( no need to cut the hat). We were able to hide the hot glue with the overlapping fold from the hat and white feather boa trim.
First you will need to remove the ears from the headband and tie some string around the end of the ear to make it more stable. Cut off the excess string.
Do this to both ears and glue them to the top of the gnomes hat. As shown here:
Cut small pieces of white feather boa trim and hot glue them around the ears and top of the hat. Add the fur to the body portion of the gnome ( as mentioned above) and you will be all set.
Here is the final outcome of our Easter Bunny Gnomes.
Please share your experience with me if you decide to take on this fun project. I look forward to hearing from you.
A little behind the scenes picture. I ended up doing this at my mom’s house and her Labrador Retriever ( Annie) decided to get in on the action.
