Hi all! I know in my earlier post I mentioned doing a full blog post how to organize and decorate for a baby shower. However with the Covid pandemic all events in my state have been cancelled, to include the baby shower I was going to put on for my sister. Total bummer! But I do have this super cute Dr. Seuss diaper cake that has never been seen elsewhere ( as I created it all from scratch), and I want to share the how to make this adorable Dr. Seuss Diaper Cake!
Before I get into the step by step directions, here is some FYI on the supplies I used – I stuck with Pampers diapers size 1 and 4. I went through my sisters baby shower registry and picked a few things to go with the diaper cake and to contribute to the design of the diaper cake. I will say as I was looking at all the stuff she had on her registry my creative side just took over and I went all out on this diaper cake.

The link below will take you to my shopping list for this project and Items you will need ( hopefully to make it easy to get what you need for this project).
Assembling the Cat in the Hat Diaper Cake:
Ok! Lets get started! Once you have all your supplies you will want to make 3 individual rounds of diaper cakes, each slightly smaller in diameter as the last to make the body of this Dr. Seuss Diaper Cake. To make it easy I suggest you use a circular cake pan to shape these diaper cakes. See below:
As a small surprise for the mom to be I made two of the diaper cake centers with burp clothes and onsies ( see the center of image below). Once they are formed in the cake pan secure them together with string or yarn. See below:
You will need to make three of these- two with size 4 diapers and the third with size 1 diapers.
Now it’s time to make the arms! I took a metal hanger, cut it in half and shaped each wire piece into an L shape. These arms will need to be anchored between the 2nd and 3rd diaper cake layers. So, I took the hot glue gun and hot glued and wrapped some yarn to the end of the hanger. See image below:
Now it is time to wrap the arms in diapers. I only used two diapers per arm. One for the upper arm and one for the forearm ( wrapped long ways around the hanger. I then tied yard around them to keep them in place. See below:
Then push the yarn through the one side of the 2nd layer of the diaper cake and tie it to a nail file to anchor it in place. See picture below:
You will want to repeat these steps for the 2nd arm. Once the second arm is in place you can assemble the body of Cat in the Hat! Largest diaper cake ( in circumference) goes on bottom and then the cakes stack on top of one another. To make sure they don’t fall over secure each cake to the cake below it with yarn. As shown below:
Attaching the Cat’s Fur:
Next step with be to add the fur. A white diaper cloth ( hour glass shape) will go in the front as the Cat’s belly. Attach the diaper cloth to the yarn with diaper pins or safety pins. The top of the burp cloth can tuck into the center of the top diaper cake to keep the top in place. First photo is how I tucked the burp cloth into the top of the Dr. Seuss diaper cake to secure it. ( the fabric is relatively thick so it will secure well without any additional pins, etc). Picture 2 is how I place the black fur and covered the rest of the diaper cake. It is fairly simple. you just need to cut slots for the arms and wrap the body first then each arm individually. Secure the fur with diaper pins or safety pins to the yarn, burp cloth, or diapers.
Once you have covered your diaper cake with black fur you will be ready to place the hands. Use the gloves that came in the Cat in the Hat costume pack and place them over the ends of the arms. I ended up stuffing the gloves with a size 1 diaper to make the gloves look full.
Adding the Finishing Touches:
You can then place the diaper cake in the purchased diaper bag to make the Cat look as though he is coming out of the diaper bag. Then fill the empty space with baby items for the mom and baby.
For the head of Cat in the Hat I used a glow in the dark (clear) blow up 12 in. beach ball ( as shown below). I found the beach ball at my local grocery store. I did a search on Amazon and I did not see this item sold. However if you cannot find this item you can always use a white or clear balloon.
Take a black permanent marker and draw in the Cat in the Hat’s face. This may seem hard to some but it is really only a few ovals and lines. Two ovals for the eyes with filled in ovals for the pupils. Small oval for the nose and a smiley face for the mouth and a few zig-zag lines for the fur around the face. I recommend looking at a picture of Cat in the Hat’s face while you draw it on the beach ball.
Tuck the Cat in the Hat’s string to the tie into the top of the diaper cake to secure it in place. I then took a metal rod ( I found a metal skewer in my kitchen) and placed it through the center of the beach ball ( there was already a hole in the center for the glow in the dark stick) and then into the top of the diaper cake to secure the head. I secured the Hat on the beach ball with tape on Velcro. The final product looked like this:
