Hi loves! Thanks for stopping by. This week lets discuss the smallest room in the home, the bathrooms (5 Important Concepts to Consider When Decorating a Beautiful & Functional Bathroom)! Not only are they the smallest room in the home but also can be one of the most expensive rooms to remodel. Bathrooms are a room you just can’t ignore in the home as everyone including guests need to use them. Hopefully, when you are done reading this post you will not only be inspired, but also be equipped to make your bathroom beautiful and more functional for your needs.
Necessary Elements In Bathroom Decorating:
Two elements that need to be in the forefront of your bathroom makeover are lighting and storage. These two items are an absolute must for bathrooms.
1. Lighting for Bathrooms
Use the proper lighting to create a bathroom that promotes a relaxing yet functional oasis. Accomplish this with 4 different types of lighting: Task, decorative, accent and sparkle lighting.
Task lighting is probably the most important of all the lighting types. Task lighting is used to see yourself and complete tasks without shadows. To accomplish this in your bathroom place lighting on either side of your mirror around eye level. Use wattage from 75- 100 watts. This is perfect for shaving, makeup application, etc. If you are able I suggest putting your task lighting on a dimmer. That way you can adjust the intensity based on your need.
Accent Lighting: Is best used for any art work displayed in your bathroom.
Decorative lighting: this is self explanatory. Just a decorative chandelier or fixture hanging in the bathroom to give off a decorative touch to your bathroom.
Ambient lighting: Ambient lighting is just additional lighting used to lighten up darker spaces in the bathroom, usually along the edges of the room.
2. Storage for Bathrooms
Storage, another key element to any bathroom. To add additional storage add shelving, recessed shelving, ladders, medicine cabinet, vanity trays bins, or baskets for additional storage space.
3. Decorative Touches
When considering what decorative touches to use in your bathroom remodel think about the architecture, and materials used throughout your home. I suggest mixing your decorative touches with timeless pieces that match with your home style combined with some intriguing touches that guests would find fun. I would love to tell you what these pieces would be, but everyone’s home and personality is different. But, to get you on the right path to brainstorming consider the elements needed in your space.
Some of these elements are: Lights, towels, rug or mat, storage, bathroom tray, mirror, baskets, towel hooks/ bar, shower curtain, soap dispenser, toilet paper dispenser, and wall art.
Troubleshooting Design Issues:
4. Natural Light vs Privacy Concerns
If you have windows in your bathroom you want the natural light to come in, but not at the sake of your privacy. Privacy is a must in all bathrooms. Some suggestions to get the both of best worlds in this situation are: install a frosted glass, or stained glass option. You can also use plantation shutters or roman shades that can be raised or lowered as needed.
5. Not Enough Space
A hard problem to solve is square footage. If you have a small bathroom it’s pretty much going to stay that way unless you knock down a wall and expand the space. But, there are things that can be done to gain small amounts of space without knocking down walls. They are:
a. Convert your tub space into a standing shower. This should free up a good portion of space that can be used for storage (if that is what is needed).
b. If you don’t have a storage issue you can switch your vanity cabinet into a pedestal sink. Giving additional square footage in the bathroom.
c. Add lots of lights in combination with a large mirror. These two things combined will give the appearance of a larger room and not make if feel so tight.
