The search for a job
Well, with Ben out of work, I’ve been doing a lot of something I hadn’t done in quite a while…researching jobs and reading the classifieds. The one thing I’ve quickly determined is that Ben is in the wrong field of work. When Nick was small, we talked about him going to school, possibly for a career as an LPN. I sure do wish now that we’d gone through with that idea. Nursing appears to be where it’s at. Not only is that one of the only things to be found in the local papers, but there’s even websites devoted to finding a job in nursing. You can even become a Travel Nurse…this site will even find you a job in another country, if you’re interested. A job and the chance to see the world…like I said, I think we’re in the wrong profession here. Maybe there’s still time to send him back to school.
The other thing that I’ve noticed while reading the classifieds lately, is that there are more people advertising that they’re looking for a job than there are actual ads for jobs. And they have them all mixed up, at least in the Charlotte Sun online. I find that frustrating. It seems like the “position/job wanted” section should be separate, not part of the “help wanted” section. Of course, maybe it’s listed that way to at least give the appearance that there are some jobs out there.
I know we’re not the only ones in this boat….where are you finding the jobs? I’m open to ideas!

WOW. Really? If I weren’t so queezy about needles, blood, gore, and other people in general I’d have to learn more about the TRAVEL nursing thing.
As far as finding jobs? He may have to resort to the good ole fashioned way, on foot, door to door, filling out applications and getting his face out there to a one on one.
Monster.com and I find you some others.
Hey Tammy… I found my job online thru the local grocery stores. Yeah sucks that it’s just a Deli Position job. But i’ve found that if you go online to look for jobs and you don’t see anything that piques your interest then look at specific job companies. I work for Food Lion and i just went onto their websites. Heck even before when workin for other companies such as walmart and gas stations i’d go onto their websites then to see if they’re hiring if they are i put in my resume and an application for the position i’m interested in. Husband found his job just by going to the company near our house and asking if they were hiring. To his surprise… lo and behold they were and they hadn’t even advertised it yet! Just had fired a person the day before! lol lucky for him! So our way of finding jobs is to go to specific companies or to their websites and look and see if they’re hiring. Can’t hurt to ask or look!
Tammy, We are in a very similar situation, only for a different reason. While in Michigan on business in July, my “young/healthy” husband suffered a heart attack, and our lives have been turned upside down since. He was sent home 3 days later to undergo bypass surgery, which at his age and due to his general health he should have recovered from quickly, notice that I said “should have”. 4 surgeries later he has been determined to be disabled and I am the one looking for a job and do I ever wish I had gone to nursing school. I agree that currently nursing appears to be the only job available. After being a stay at home mom for 18 years, there is just nothing available for me, but I will be happy to share with you some things that I have learned. The Florida Dept of Children & Families has a job board that is continually updated, and I have recently learned that there are some CNA classes in which you can obtain a certificate in a week. If I hear of anything else I will pass it on to you.
