The effects of Katrina…even in Florida
Things are really weird around here. I last saw stuff like this last year, especially in the days after Hurricane Charley. Of course, since Hurricane Charley hit here (or three miles from my house, anyway), that wasn’t so unexpected. Now…Katrina hit miles and miles from here. But, what do we have…rapidly rising gas prices…and massive lines at the gas pumps. It was enough to cause me to go out and get gas on my lunch hour today…and when I got off work at 9pm, I was glad I did so because the lines are even longer now. Lines for gas at 9:15PM on a WEDNESDAY night, who’s ever heard of such a thing?
What’s going on in your hometown?

Yesterday, gas at cumby’s was 3.17 and across the street at mobil 2.87. Guess where I went? Today both are 3.17. We are gonna see 4 bucks before we know it.
Things are really weird here as well. I’m on the West coast of Florida. I just got a call from my husband and he’s telling me he went to 6 different gas stations this morning and no one had gas! It’s kinda scary. My heart goes out to those people who were directly hit by hurricane Katrina. We are all going to feel her wrath in one way or another.
I’m in Houston – things are getting weird here too. Gas is avg $2.90 a gal for reg unleaded. The freeway from Louisiana to Houston is jam packed. They say the Astrodome is full and can’t take more refugees. One’s that made it here on their own are being turned away. Our hotels are packed. My mom works in apartments and said large companies are renting apartments by the dozens for their displaced employees. Most with 6 mo leases. They suspect we have some 50 thousand + refugees here. They have warned that it is dangerous to go out alone / be careful – some of the people are desperate and “have nothing to lose”. Radios and Tv stations are frantically trying to organize drives/efforts. I was speaking to co-workers and the discussion turned to the need to not immobilize the cities economy while trying to help. I feel for the victims of Katrina. My heartbreaks as I read the stories – this could have easily been us.
$2.89/gal here in Central Florida with at least a 20 minute late. And people are acting nuts! Some say they’re stocking up on food staples because they expect those prices to jump as well.
Everyone seems to have reverted back to the survival behavior we all exhibited after each of the 3 hurricanes last year. I guess because we didn’t have TV for our disaster so we’re living vicariously because we have news coverage this time.
Gas was $2.98 when I went to work this morning at 7:30 in Missouri…on lunch it was at $3.10…someone at the bookstore told me that they were in line when it was $3.02 and it went up to $3.10…2 price changes in less then 8 hours….oh my!!!! Talked to one lady at the bookstore and she said that it costs her $20 every 2 days just to go back and forth to work…..is there no end in sight. Of course food prices will be going up and everything else because of the gas prices….except of course our wages.
Everyone try and have a safe & enjoyable labor day weekend.
