Ben here again, putting in a word for this Memorial Day weekend. If you’re like me, you’ll enjoy it…but mixed in before, during and after the grilled dogs and burgers and perhaps a cold beer, you might do me a favor and honor the memory of a man I never had the privilege of meeting…A fallen Marine Lieutenant Colonel named David Greene.
Two Memorial Days ago, Tammy and I were at a ceremony held in Punta Gorda where among the dignitaries and guest speakers were the surviving family of a Marine who was lost the previous summer in Al-Anbar province, Iraq. As the speaker mentioned things to the effect that Col. Greene was a helicopter pilot flying cobras etc…things started clicking in my head. My best ‘Bro from my ‘Corps days M/Sgt Dixon had previously described this incident to me during his first of two tours in Iraq.
After that ceremony, and with tears in my eyes I made my way up to the stage and managed to shake hands with the family that had just lost a brother, just lost a son.
I hope that whomever reads this post will join me this weekend by taking advantage of everything that this great country has offer us, and have a fantastic time…We will!
Come Monday, I hope that you will have seen one or two of our remaining WWII vets, Korean War vets, ‘Nam vets and perhaps listened to their stories.
Perhaps if you’re the praying type, you’ll even say a prayer for David S. Greene (Lt.Col/USMC) and his family.
Thanks!
