Jury selection has started~Denise Amber Lee

Today was the start of the trial of Michael King for the murder of Denise Amber Lee. They’re in the process of trying to select a jury. If they cannot select an impartial jury in Sarasota County, then the judge would have to consider a change of venue, which would also probably delay the trial. So far, it looks like they may be successful in selecting a jury in Sarasota County.

I’ll continue to update every day, and let everyone know what’s going on, as best I know. I’m also considering putting an open thread in for anyone who wants to discuss the trial. If so, I’ll put that as a sticky at the top of the page, and post updates below.

SARASOTA: Jury selection is underway in the trial of Michael King, who is accused of kidnapping and murdering a North Port woman in January 2008.

King was arrested just hours after Denise Amber Lee was abducted.

Despite a number of clues, including a 9-1-1 call from the woman while King was allegedly driving around with the 21-year-old mother of two in his car, authorities were unable to find her before she was killed.

Her body was found in a shallow grave near I-75 and Toledo Blade Boulevard – a short distance away from where King was arrested.

In King’s car, authorities found a shovel and a flashlight.

Sarasota County Judge Deno Economou has set aside a week for jury selection in the high-profile case, which has been featured nationally on NBC’s Dateline program.

Prosecutors and defense attorneys asked potential jurors about their exposure to media reports and their opinions on the death penalty.

“In the coming weeks I’m going to have my friends and family and friends near me and that’s really what matters. But justice will be served and that’s what we’re focusing on,” said Nathan Lee, the victim’s husband.

We have a reporter in court for jury selection – read her updates at right.
