Who killed Alex Teehee?

November 30th, 2008 by Tammy | 4 Comments | Filed in News, SW Florida news

As I was driving down 41 today, this sign caught my eye:

It got me thinking about this case, which really hasn’t received much media attention. Alex was a 20 year old father of two little boys (he had full custody of the kids, unusual for a guy…especially such a young one). He was walking down a street in Charlotte Harbor, FL, in July of this year when he was hit and left for dead. The investigation seems to indicate that this was NOT an accident.

“We are not giving up of course, but it’s getting a little frustrating.” Thursday in North Port his father, Tab Teehee, caries a ribbon in remembrance of his son. He believes the people who hit his son knew him. “He wasn’t just out for a walk and happened to get hit by a car. There is more to it then that.”

The Florida Highway Patrol’s initial investigation says Teehee was likely hit on purpose when a car crossed the middle of the road making contact, it then made a u-turn, drove past Alex and left him to die. “Evidently there is enough evidence from witness statements that this was an intentional act.”

His father says they’ve even found threatening texts on his cell phone right before the crash. ABC 7 has learned a 17-year-old North Port boy has been questioned. His name has not been released. Tab Teehee says other witnesses have changed their story or are afraid to talk. “There are people who are involved with this that knew our son. That right there let us know that it couldn’t be accidental. It could have been an accident in the case that they didn’t intend for our son to die. But that is what happened.”

WWSB ABC 7

In the 4 months since this happened, apparently there was been very little progress in solving this case. This is from yesterday’s Charlotte Sun.

Teehees unhappy with police investigation following son’s hit-and-run death
By TERRY O’CONNOR
North Port Assistant Editor

NORTH PORT — Police have hit a dead end in the investigation into the hit-and-run death of 20-year-old Alex Tab Teehee of North Port.

The Florida Highway Patrol has not reported anything new since the week of the fatal incident, which does not appear to be accidental. Alex’s parents say they are afraid their son’s death will be left unsolved.

“We have placed 12 handwritten signs throughout North Port on the street corners letting the community know that Alex Teehee was killed, and that the people responsible for his death are at home with their families,” his father, Tab Teehee, said Friday. “Alex deserves justice.”

The Teehees say they are prepared to offer a reward for information leading to their son’s killer.

“That’s something we’ve been working on with Crime Stoppers and the Sheriff’s Office,” Tab said. “We’re prepared to up the ante. We’ve been advised by sheriff’s department and the state attorney’s office to hold off on that. But it’s really getting hard.”

Alex was struck at 11 p.m. July 13 while walking on the edge of Sibley Bay Street in Port Charlotte where he had just moved. He was flown by MedStar helicopter to Lee Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead the next day.

The Teehee family, which includes Alex’s two young sons, Kaden and Eli, was told immediately after the accident the FHP investigation was progressing well. Then, nothing in the four months since.

The black or dark-colored SUV involved in the accident fled the scene traveling north, the Florida Highway Patrol reported. Witnesses and 911 callers also contributed to the investigation.

Lt. Christopher Miller of FHP acknowledged the accident was odd.

“Hit-and-run fatalities, depending on the county and the different areas and circumstances, for the most part they are pretty rare,” Miller said.

Alex moved to North Port in 2001 from Oklahoma. He graduated from North Port High School in 2006 and had just moved to Port Charlotte.

“He hadn’t even been living in that neighborhood for a week,” Tab said.

It stands to reason that someone must know something. It’s hard to believe in this little area, where gossip is everywhere, that no one has talked. Alex deserves justice. His parents deserve it. Most of all, his little boys deserve justice. They’re the ones who are now growing up without their dad.

If you have any information, please call SW Florida Crimestoppers at 1-800-780-TIPS.

New Theme

November 22nd, 2008 by Tammy | 3 Comments | Filed in Just stuff, bloggie stuff

Ok, now that I’m all done working on Joy’s beautiful new blog (go look, it’s really quite gorgeous, if I do say so myself), I found myself with nothing to do….so I decided to give my own blog an overhaul. If for some reason you’re not seeing the new look, try clearing your cache. :) And let me know what you think. This started out as the Quick Press theme, but as I always do, I kind of tore it up and tried to make it look different. It’s my first time trying a theme with widgets, I haven’t decided if I like them or hate them (I’m too used to hand coding everything, I feel like I’m cheating!). As always, if you find any bugs, please let me know so I can try to correct them. Thanks!

An update on Coralrose….and YAY for Chief Lewis

November 19th, 2008 by Tammy | 1 Comment | Filed in Missing Children, News, SW Florida news, crimes against children, sex offenders

I’m going to be lazy and just post the article from today’s Sun Editorial section…..but I do want to say a special thanks to North Port Police Chief Terry Lewis. He’s been there every step of the way in the long road towards an arrest in the murder of 6 year old Coralrose Fullwood. Even when I was convinced that the NoPoPo was doing a whole lot of nothing, clearly, he and his men were working away on this case. No, it doesn’t bring Coralrose back….but at least the person who committed this awful crime will pay for what he did. Not only did they solve this crime, but Chief Lewis has the grace to thank the lawmakers who passed a law that made it possible. For this, Chief Lewis, and all of the officers of the North Port Police Department, deserve to be recognized and thanked.

Chief thanks state legislators who passed DNA law

OUR POSITION: North Port Police Chief Terry Lewis’ investigative team continues to search for a second person in Coralrose murder case as he thanks lawmakers.

North Port Police Chief Terry Lewis will drive across the state to personally thank lawmakers living in Stuart and Miami for their role in supporting Florida’s DNA law.

Lewis has already met with one legislator in Orlando who played a key role in passing the law that helped North Port track down, arrest and charge 27-year-old Patrick D. Murphy for the murder of 6-year-old Coralrose Fullwood.

The law requires officials to collect DNA samples from individuals arrested for crimes such as burglary and theft for a database. Lewis reports a study indicates about half of the sexual crimes that have been solved were committed by people arrested earlier for burglary and other crimes. Without the Florida DNA law, Murphy would not be incarcerated in the Sarasota County jail.

Murphy has no record or history of being a sexual offender or pedophile. Yet Lewis says Murphy’s DNA had been found by medical examiners at the Coralrose crime scene. Murphy is expected to be tried for the crime in late summer or early fall of 2009.

More than two years later there still are two to 10 investigators working daily on the Coralrose case. Two additional people also are assembling evidence and filing documents for assistant state attorney Lon Arend.

Murphy has been talking to the North Port officers investigating the case. Lewis will not disclose if Murphy has confessed, or if he has implicated anyone else in the crime.

Lewis says his investigative team continues to believe their evidence indicates at least one additional person was involved in the little girl’s death. Police are still interviewing people about Coralrose’s father, Dale Fullwood, although he has not been arrested or charged in his daughter’s death.

Except for the killer, Dale Fullwood is said to have been the last person to see Coralrose alive, after he returned home from his bartending job in Fort Myers at about 2 a.m. on Sept. 16, 2006.

Later, police found child pornography on Fullwood’s computers but they produced no evidence he was involved in this case. Because of his child pornography violation, Fullwood served much of a year behind bars. He later was arrested for violating probation when he visited a niece who has a child and touch the child’s hand. Fullwood is now serving three years for probation violation.

Meanwhile, investigators continue to talk to Fullwood’s friends, relatives and acquaintances. Among other places, police have checked on the MotorSports Cafe in Fort Myers, where Fullwood was bar manager at the time of the crime.

Cafe owner Frank Lesicko of Cape Coral drove to North Port to complain to Lewis about the aggressiveness of North Port’s investigators. Lesicko and several others have agreed to take polygraph tests, but Lewis will not reveal what the police have learned, if anything.

Chief Lewis, who is now roughly two years from retirement, says he is determined to identify the second suspect and close the Coralrose case before he completes his long his law enforcement career. With the patience and diligence he has shown, and a little luck, he will achieve that goal.

Michael King incompetent? Give me a break.

November 15th, 2008 by Tammy | 5 Comments | Filed in Crimes Against Women, Denise Amber Lee, News, SW Florida news, sex offenders

Some people will try anything to delay things.

Defense wants hearing on King’s competence
By Todd Ruger
Published: Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 1:00 a.m.
Last Modified: Saturday, November 15, 2008 at 12:27 a.m.

SARASOTA COUNTY - The man accused of kidnapping Denise Lee from her North Port home and killing her may be incompetent to stand trial, his attorney says.

Michael King’s attorney has asked for a competency hearing to determine if King has the ability to help in his own defense. No hearing date has been set.

“Conversations with defendant reveal an irrational thought process on the part of the defendant,” assistant public defender Carolyn Schlemmer wrote in the motion.

Defendants are required to show an understanding of the charges against them and facts behind the charges so they can help in their defense.

The charges are not dropped if King, 37, is determined to be incompetent, and he is not considered not guilty by reason of insanity.

A defendant who is declared incompetent is sent to a state hospital for treatment until doctors determine the person meets the legal criteria for competency.

The motion comes six months after a judge ordered an examination to see if a past head injury has affected King’s brain function.

Attorneys for King said in a motion that he had suffered a head injury and they wanted doctors to do a test known as a PET scan.

Experts say such injuries can change a person’s personality and behavior later in life.

Prosecutors are seeking the death penalty for King, who is charged with kidnapping, rape and murder.

Lee, 21, was reported missing from her North Port home on the afternoon of Jan. 17.

Her body was found two days later in a shallow grave six miles from her home.

King was arrested on a kidnapping charge the night of the abduction and was charged with murder after the body was found. He is being held in solitary confinement at the Sarasota County jail.

A lab has matched King’s DNA to DNA found on Lee’s body, according to court documents filed by the prosecution.

Spare me the agony. Michael King is perfectly competent. He knew exactly what he was doing. He somehow managed to target Denise, get her out of her house without anyone seeing him. He was competent enough to know that what he did was wrong, and that he somehow had to cover his tracks. That’s why he borrowed the shovel and gas can from his cousin. He knew that Jane Kowalski knew that something was wrong with the situation in his car, and to turn off the highway while she was in another lane and could not continue to follow him. He knew that he had to kill Denise in order to silence her, and he did so. He knew enough to bury her, not just leaving her out in the open, making it more difficult to locate her. He knew enough to dispose of her clothing, his clothing, and the gun. He knew enough to HIDE the gun, which as far as I know, has not been located. He even took the time to think up a story about being kidnapped himself (a stupid story, I will admit….but if he didn’t know right from wrong, didn’t know that he needed to try to cover his tracks, why would he have bothered with even a stupid story?). Michael King is perfectly aware of what he did, and is, in my own opinion at least, competent to stand trial. This is just a delay tactic. If Michael King were any kind of man (which obviously he is not), he would go ahead and admit to what he did, and put this whole awful incident to rest. Let the family have some closure. But no, let’s just delay things, and make the family have to continue to dread the upcoming trial (which WILL come). He’s just continuing to behave like the jerk he clearly is. Honestly, I’m not surprised.

Divers say they found bag with fingers, toes in it

ORANGE COUNTY, Fla. (WOFL FOX 35, Orlando) — The dive team searching the Little Econ River around Blanchard Park say they located a
plastic bag with fingers and toes weighted down by bricks.

A second bag with stuffed animals in it was also found. The area has been roped off.

The divers were hired by Bounty Hunter Leonard Padilla and have been combing the waters of Little Econ River to find the remains of missing 3-year-old Caylee Anthony.

Padilla says the 30 to 40 divers were hired from Black Water Divers. There are approximately five divers in the water at the time, searching for any signs of the toddler. The dive team is specialized searching areas that are extremely dark, and they said they are going to search until they find Caylee.

Finally, Holli Baty will begin to pay the price for taking Cheyenne Eairheart from those who loved her so very much. It’s not enough….I think the sentences should have run consecutively….but, at least it will be a long, long time before she enjoys her freedom again. RIP, Cheyenne. You will always be missed.

A letter from Peggy Lee~Pass this on if you can vote for DeVries

October 31st, 2008 by Tammy | 8 Comments | Filed in 911 Reform, Denise Amber Lee, Election '08

Dear friends,

I realize some of you live in Charlotte County and some of you don’t. But, just about all of us have friends in Charlotte County. Ken DeVries who is running for sheriff will be at the corner of Rt 776 and Pine Street from 11AM - 1PM tomorrow carrying signs. We plan on being there but we have the babies tomorrow so we don’t know exactly how long we’ll last. If you or any of your friends are interested in seeing Ken DeVries elected please join us in supporting him. We honestly believe this man has a chance and he’s the right man for the job.

As you know, Bill Cameron has treated our family deplorably and with disdain. He’s also lied about us. All because we want an external investigation into what happened on January 17. Grave errors were made that night in the 911 Call Center. It was much more than a “missed opportunity” which is what Cameron and his campaign manager, John Davenport, would have us believe. I’ve read the internal affairs investigation 3 times and we need reform in our 911 system badly. Now that we’ve delved into this, we’re finding other errors with other people that haven’t had the publicity we’ve had. We hear horror stories all the time. We hear good stories too. All we’re asking is that the problems be acknowledged, addressed and fixed. And if Cameron is elected that will probably never happen and if it does it’ll probably have to be at the federal level.

In any case, please, if you feel so inclined and would like to see Ken DeVries elected, please join us tomorrow or pass this email on to as many Charlotte County friends as you can.

Thank you dearly,

Peggy Lee

The Race for Charlotte County Sheriff ‘08

October 26th, 2008 by Tammy | 12 Comments | Filed in Denise Amber Lee, Election '08

I don’t usually blog much in the way of politics…..I leave that to Stacy, Wendy and EM, they do a great job, and I can stay informed just reading them. And if I try to discuss it at work, I end up in fights anyway. But local politics….ok, I’ll jump in.

The big election here in Charlotte County this year is for Sheriff. There’s 4 candidates that I know of. Bill Cameron, Ken DeVries, Jim Gallagher, and Jim Melo. Normally, I pretty much vote along party lines….I’m a registered Republican, so, under normal circumstances, that would mean I’d go ahead and vote for Bill Cameron. This time, though, that’s not happening.

Bill Cameron was the person in charge of the 911 Call Center the night that Denise Amber Lee was kidnapped. He’s backed by John Davenport, who has completely refused to take any responsibility for the way his department handled things that night. In fact, he basically just brushes the whole event off. Here is what Bill Cameron has to say about it:

The kidnapping and murder of North Port stay-at-home mom Denise Lee has become a major part of the platforms of Gallagher, DeVries and Melo, with each calling for a deeper investigation into the Charlotte 911 center and how officials handled information in the case.

Cameron, meanwhile, continues to downplay a mishandled 911 call with information about Lee’s location shortly before she was killed. Michael King, of North Port, has been charged in the case.

“Nobody asks me anything about it,” said Cameron. “Those are the only three guys saying anything about it.”

Herald Tribune

Nobody asks him about it? No one is talking about it?! Bill Cameron must not be listening to public opinion too well, then, because plenty of people are talking about it. And we want this guy running things at our Sheriff’s Department?

There was also a public forum recently where all of the candidates were asked about the Denise Amber Lee tragedy, as well as the controversial DUI checkpoints that Charlotte County has. Here are the questions, along with all four candidates responses. Strangely enough, Bill Cameron stands completely alone on both of these issues. How can three people be wrong and just Bill Cameron (more of the same) be right?

Regarding the charlotte County Sheriff’s Department handling of the 911 call from Jane Kowalski:

Will you request a grand jury investigation into the handling of the Jane Kowalski 911 call in the Denise Lee case?

Bill Cameron:

No. This question was already asked of the State Attorney and the Governor’s Office and both said no. A Grand Jury is not convened for employee performance issues. This incident has already been investigated fully. My opponents have tried to make this tragic case a political issue, for which they should be ashamed. Denise’s father (Rick Goff) was in my office last week telling me he wants people to stop using his daughter’s death for politics. I asked him if he has any unanswered questions
regarding this incident and he said no. He knows everything about this case, and quite frankly it is his opinion that matters the most to me.

**a quick note here….I’ve seen Rick at many fundraising events for the Denise Amber Lee Foundation…the purpose of which is to reform the 911 system. If he were against it, I don’t think he’d be at the events. JMO, of course. I can also pull up video of Rick stating that he has a real problem with the way things were handled that night. So I’m not buying this story.

Ken DeVries:

I have learned throughout this campaign that the community at large is outraged at this horrific event and tragedy. I will review and investigate this incident with a new internal affairs investigation team. If there is any hint of criminal wrong doing or cover up there will be consequences for all those involved including a grand jury investigation if need be.

Jim Gallagher:

Immediately upon taking office I would request the state attorney’s office, other outside neighboring sheriff offices or police departments and maybe the federal government if that was needed to look into all the allegations of misconduct that have been presented to me. I find it
disturbing that the superior officer who conducted the internal affairs on this debacle had recently been reassigned from being in charge of the communications division, she had been involved in the debacle, covered up Cameron’s participation despite his cell phone numbers appearing as two
quick references in report, was responsible for the use of Nextel phones to communicate (thereby bypassing regulated communications which are recorded). I would also look into allegations of possible tampering with 911 calls that I have heard about from past employees of the office regarding other possible incidents.

Jim Melo:

Absolutely, the citizens as well as the family of Denise Amber Lee deserve this. Completing a Grand Jury investigation will remove all doubt as to what transpired. Whenever there is great bodily injury or death involved in any incident there should be an independent investigation. Bringing in an outside agency will show how the agency handled the situation at the same time removing the dark cloud that has lingered from the onset of this tragedy.

Then we have Charlotte County’s use of DUI checkpoints. This is a program that brings together several agencies, who then proceed to pull over EVERYONE who drives by. Whether you’re doing anything wrong or not. Usually it nets a couple of DUI arrests…..and a ton of silly stuff, like tail lights out, etc. There are tons of cops involved. Not only does it seem that it should be a violation of people’s rights to be pulled over for nothing….but who is patrolling the rest of the county while this is going on? The other part that makes it a complete joke is the fact that it’s published in the newspaper IN ADVANCE where the checkpoint will be. Therefore, the drunks take another way home. How stupid is that?

Will you continue the DUI checkpoint program? Explain.

Bill Cameron:

Yes, as Sheriff I will continue the DUI checkpoint program. Sobriety checkpoints change driving habits and save lives. They keep drinking and driving on people’s minds and they deter people from making the decision to drive drunk. About 87 percent of drunk drivers apprehended at checkpoints would not have been apprehended through other means. DUI checkpoints combined with our roving DUI patrols have resulted in a decrease in traffic crashes and DUI related crashes in Charlotte County. And that saves lives, saves money, and saves families.

Ken DeVries:

There must be vigilant DUI enforcement through daily routine patrol procedures. It is a waste of resources to place up to 30 deputies in one location and announce publicly that DUI checkpoint enforcement will be in effect, thereby allowing potential violators to take alternate routes to avoid these checkpoints. Consistent, highly visible patrols are the best tool for DUI prevention and detection.

Jim Gallagher:

A total waste of taxpayer time and money. There are other legal methods to enforce the DUI laws without resorting to draconian measures such as stopping everyone to catch a few morons who didn’t listen to the radio, TV or read the papers about the latest checkpoint. People in the bars tell people when checkpoints are set up, they start the preparations hours before…Duh? who do you catch the way Cameron and Davenport work it? The ones who don’t listen, read or watch TV? Stop 1,000 to get 15 or 20? What about the rights of the 980 to not to be inconvenienced? A little reminder for those who think it is ok to stop everyone: “They that can give up essential liberty to obtain a little temporary safety deserve neither liberty nor safety.”

Jim Melo:

No, DUI checkpoints will not continue. However, DUI intervention will always be one of my top priorities as your sheriff. I believe that DUI checkpoints are intrusive and violate the rights of the citizens. There are studies that prove saturation patrols are much more effective than checkpoints at a much lesser cost to the taxpayer. Bearing a lesser cost saturation patrols for DUI will be conducted more frequently. This will yield more arrests for DUI and make our streets safer.

I guess most people who know me around here are aware that I’m voting for DeVries. I had already made my decision on this, but his answer to the following question sealed it for me.

Why are you the best candidate for sheriff?

If and when things go wrong, I will own my mistakes and consequences. I will acknowledge mistakes, apologize for them and fix them. I will not hide and disappear when things go wrong to protect my credibility. I will restore trust and confidence through transparency. I recognize the single most important job of a leader is to inspire trust.

And that’s exactly what we need here. Some willing to be held accountable to the public, and someone we can trust. Bill Cameron is not that man. Bill Cameron is Davenport’s man….and Davenport has done a fine job showing how fast he’ll hide from his mistakes….and when finally dragged out into the public eye, will simply deny any wrongdoing. That’s exactly what we do NOT need in Charlotte County.

It’s been a busy week, and I haven’t gotten a chance to sit down and post this. Actually, the day of the Denise Amber Lee Foundation Golf Tournament, I couldn’t find video….but here it is, at long last.

And here we are, working that day. :)

Volunteers Kathy Schworm, Jenn Singleton, Jeanine Gebert, Tammy Hanson and Meri Barnes worked the 911 Reform Denise Amber Lee Foundation Golf Scramble, Saturday morning. The first annual golf benefit was held at the Bobcat Trails Golf and Country Club.

And consider yourself warned….I’m getting ready for a post on the election here in Charlotte County for the Sheriff. Again, I ask anyone who is reading locally to think long and hard before you vote this year. We need change in how things are run here….and Bill Cameron will not be the one to bring it.
