Illegal Immigration

by Ben on May 23, 2007

Thanks to my wonderful wife Tammy for allowing me to vent on her blog…once again! I’ve written on the subject of ILLEGAL immigration here once before, so if this sounds familiar…I’m sorry!

In 1982, I went through the lengthy process of immigrating to this country. Went through the comprehensive background checks, filled out the reams of paperwork, paid applicable fees. I waited and waited, and one day my green card finally came. Shortly thereafter, I happened to be on an unscheduled visit to the Armed Forces Recruiting office in Plattsburgh, NY. More reams and reams of paperwork followed, and a few months later I was looking at the hair that was shaved off my head in a large pile on the floor at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island SC. A few years later, this still young immigrant was now a Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps and was saying the Pledge of Allegiance while getting his US Citizenship at a ceremony in San Diego.

A few weeks ago, Tammy and I were in the Shell station where we go every morning on the way to work. On that particular morning, there was an even larger than normal crowd of Illegal Mexicans in the store…a sight that we’ve long since grown accustomed to. Maybe 20 or 30 of them, I don’t know.

I usually don’t pay much attention to them, but one caught my eye. These folks wear an almost comedic type of attire. In the Florida heat, they may wear heavy fleece long sleeve shirts, long pants and all…perhaps T-shirts and ball caps that have completely random slogans on them, anything from “Mickey-Mouse” to “Ski Utah” on them. Almost funny! The dude that caught my eye wasn’t so funny.

He wore a ball cap that was crimson and gold in color, colors that almost always catch my eye. On the crimson and gold cap was the “Eagle, Globe and Anchor” emblem of the US Marines.

Somehow, I’ve remained a man of civility….and that morning I did not make the papers by ripping his windpipe right out of his scrawny neck and shoving it right down his mouth. God alone understands why I did not do that.

What possibly gives that man the right to be in this country?

What possibly can President Bush, or the authors and supporters of this “Immigration Reform Bill” be thinking by doing anything short of enforcing the laws that are already on the books.

If you haven’t already done so, please write your Representatives and let them know that we need secured borders and trespassers sent home.

Um…I would have just gone ahead and ripped that hat off his head. I am a Marine’s wife with little patience for bullshit. THAT qualifies.

My in-laws were naturalized in 1966 after FIVE YEARS OF TRYING TO PROVE THAT AN OXFORD MEDICAL EDUCATION WAS WORTHY TO GAIN ENTRE into this country. Explain THAT.

Bushie makes me want to PUKE with his worthless “we are a country of laws” pronouncements. Its over. This country is NOT the one my ancestors FOUNDED.

It makes me SICK to know MY children will see the sunset of greatness in America.

Janemom, I appreciate and share your passionate response. I hope however that you are premature in your predictions. Personally, I find myself walking the fine line of seeing and appreciating the greatness of America and it’s people every day, while wondering how our elected officials can ruin it. How they are elected and how they serve seem two different things.
Some days I want to throw in the towel, and on others I cling to my optimistic nature. I tend to agree that the issues that face our country here and now are critical and pivotal. We will likely live to see if the right path is taken.
