A sad day

steveirwin.jpg

I woke up early this morning, as I always do. Sometimes, if Ben is awake in the night and sees something interesting, he’ll leave it up on the screen for me. That was the case this morning, Fox News was up, and the leading story was that Steve Irwin, The Crocodile Hunter, had died…from tangling with a stringray. My initial reaction was shock, I was pretty sure that I must be reading it wrong. This is a guy who routinely tangled with huge crocodiles and giant snakes (God how I hate snakes). I’ve SEEN stingrays…I’ve stood in shallow water at Englewood, watching them swim by, coming, I’m sure, inches from me (and I’m a wimp!). How could a man like Steve Irwin have died from such a thing?

Sadly, tho, it was real. I’ve been faced with the story all day, and with the questions my kids have asked….my kids, who used to watch “Steve and Terri” on a regular basis when they were a bit younger. This story freaks me out, I admit….it makes me realize that yes, we’re all mortal, and we’re all going to die, someday. If it happened to the Crocodile Hunter, and from something as silly and routine as a sting from a stingray….I guess someday we’re all gonna go.

In the meantime, I mourn the loss of such a clearly wonderful man…a man who loved his family, and nature, and all the creatures on this earth (even the creepy ones). Please say a prayer for his family, I cannot imagine how they must be feeling tonight.
