Not Ready to Make Nice
~~The Dixie Chicks~~
song written by:
Emily Robinson, Martie Maguire,
Natalie Maines & Dan Wilson

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting

I’m through with doubt
There’s nothing left for me to figure out
I’ve paid a price
And I’ll keep paying

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I know you said
Can’t you just get over it
It turned my whole world around
And I kind of like it

I made my bed and I sleep like a baby
With no regrets and I don’t mind sayin’
It’s a sad sad story when a mother will teach her
Daughter that she ought to hate a perfect stranger
And how in the world can the words that I said
Send somebody so over the edge
That they’d write me a letter
Sayin’ that I better shut up and sing
Or my life will be over

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

I’m not ready to make nice
I’m not ready to back down
I’m still mad as hell and
I don’t have time to go round and round and round
It’s too late to make it right
I probably wouldn’t if I could
‘Cause I’m mad as hell
Can’t bring myself to do what it is you think I should

Forgive, sounds good
Forget, I’m not sure I could
They say time heals everything
But I’m still waiting

Hmmm… maybe because you’re the “star” standing up there at a microphone in front of a massive crowd in a foreign country bashing your own country’s leader?

    Here’s a question for her/them:
How in the world can the words that they said
Send you so over the edge
    That you’d write a song….

Is she talking about herself and her hatred of W or what? My guess is no.

And Maine’s attack on President Bush wasn’t hating a perfect stranger, yeah right. I have a word for her but I will restrain myself for using it. She’s just another hypocrite who thinks that we the people are waiting to hear her latest pearl of wisdom.

WTF has she got to be “mad as hell” about? It’s not like living in America hasn’t been good for her.

they are smarter than us. it’ll all be better as soon as we realize it.

chez diva made the best point.

Isn’t this typical of liberals? Always mad and angry.

She’s not ready to make nice until the money starts to dwindle down. But I think it is way too late. Country music will never take them back. They might could do pop I suppose. I liked her voice. Too bad she was such an idiot.

  7. Jeff H said:

They never had a collective mind, and precious little talent.

I think Natalie Mains needs to finally figure out her “gender identity”.

Well, one thing she might be mad as hell about is the price of gas these days ($2.79 as of tonight), which has gone largely due to speculation that Iran’s oil exports will dry up if Bush pushes sanctions through the UN. Another thing might be the 16 troops who’ve died (9 from hostile fire) since the beginning of the month. Their deaths seem to be doing a lot of good, what with Iraq essentially in a civil war.

Anyways, thanks for the post. You’ve convinced me that the next CD I buy should be by the Dixie Chicks.

  9. Romeocat said:

You know, I didn’t scorn the Chicks so much for what they said, as for WHERE and WHEN they said it. Simply courtesy: you don’t wash your family laundry in front of strangers.

It sure took a LOT of guts to say what they said in front of a foreign audience, instead of in front of their strongest (former) fanbase in the country they sh*t on.

I don’t buy them anymore, and I don’t listen to them anymore.

Censorship? Nah, just putting my money where my mouth is!

I wonder where this record will go, sales-wise…?

Toby Keith was mad about the murder of thousands of Americans… this bimbo is mad because some people said mean things about her.

    What a self-centered, spoiled moron!

  11. tim said:

well… i’m the one who uploaded the youtube video… and all i have to say is that the video is excellent.

    don’t give me this “she’s such a hypocrite, spoiled, self-centered star” crap…

what she said was perfectly fine and why she got attacked for saying it? …i don’t know.

jennifer aniston called bush a f**king idiot… she got NO backlash for that.

so… in the end… long live the dixie chicks

ps: bush’s ratings hit a new record low …wow… i’m proud to be under his ruling.

  12. Tammy said:

I never said it was a bad video, I just disagree with what she’s saying, which, of course, I’m allowed to do, just as she’s able to say what she thinks. I was actually a huge fan before she made her comments. As some people have said, the worst thing about it was that she expressed negative opinions in another country.

    Just my opinion, of couse.

  13. DeeJay said:

Oh how many days have I felt like that?!! Now all I need to get away with venting my anger is a bunny suit!! Cool!!

“what she said was perfectly fine and why she got attacked for saying it? …i don’t know.”

That whole “politics ending at the waters edge”, especially during a time of war, only pertains when you agree, I suppose.

ps: bush’s ratings hit a new record low

My guess is that he won’t win the presdency in ‘08, again.

wow… i’m proud to be under his ruling.

Too bad. Your guy lost. That’s the way the system works. You’re sarcastically proud and John Kerry is still a senator and the chicks are vernturing into rock because their country audience is less inclined to hear them.

I remembr them going on Maher before the election begging folks to come to one of the anti-Bush concerts because there were 1200 seats left….in a 3,000 seat stadium.
If only they’d have known that 18 months after the election that there’d be some polling that they’d like!

BTW, my favorite DC moment was when these brash, sassy, tough girls went before Diane Sawyer to discuss the issue and cried like pre-teen girls.

NOW they’re mad as hell and not ready to forget, fighters that they are. When it came time to respond to the scandal….they boo-hooed as if their edition of Tiger Beat magazine got eaten by the dog.

    Awwwww.

Simple question, simple answer – YES, they have lost what is left of their collective minds. Perhaps these chicks should give some thought to the mothers who taught their sons to hate perfect strangers – like those in the twin towers.

  17. Cathy said:

I think they are the only cool think that has happened to country music since Johnny Cash. I saw the video yesterday and it made me cry. It was followed by a Toby Keith video in which he takes viagra and then gets punched in the face. Irony? Natalie- you are my hero.

  18. Mike said:

This debate is so tiresome. Dissent is not disloyalty.

I love our country and regard it as the best form of government and the greatest place to live on earth. I would fight and die for it.

Freedom of speech is one of those things, in my opinion, that has helped to keep our country strong and free and moving forward.

Thank god for the voices of dissent in our past who said….

    … slavery is wrong.
… denying women the right to vote is wrong.
… “seperate but equal” is wrong

Please don’t misunderstand me. Being a “voice of dissent” doesn’t necessarily equate to being right. But, as John Stuart Mill wrote in “On Liberty,” those who would censor do us a great disfavor because they disallow the opportunity of truth to collide with error. And truth will be made more clear by its collision with error.

I support the war on terroism. And I’m immensely proud and grateful for our men and women in uniform – especially those that are in harms way. Having said that, I think the war in Iraq is a mistake. I don’t think it has made us safer and I don’t think the reasons our government has provided us for being there are legitimate.

Yes, I know Saddam Hussein was a despot. I know what he did to his own people. However, if that were the criterion for going to war we’d be fighting in a lot of places right now.

I’m glad that I live in a country where I don’t owe blind obedience to a king or President. Where my rights of dissent (at least for the time being) are constitutionally protected.

I agree with the great Republican President, Theodore Roosevelt, who said in 1918: “To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president, right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public.”

  19. Johnson Rice said:

Seems like they are quite sane. Good for them. Some people are making comments about them being liberals… Seems strange to me to say that, as I am a fiscal conservative who believes in civil rights and freedom, and I would think there would be others “mad as hell” too. They are attacking Bush, and the Government. You’d have to be a moron to think that means that they are attacking America. Dissent is the highest form of patriotism. Especially when the split in the country is nearly 50/50. The founding fathers of this country showed a level of dissent when the splits wasn’t even that good, and they risked being burned, hanged, disembowled, and then possibly drawn and quartered. (Pick an order)

The fact that some of you people have time to sit around on yalls lazy ass’s online and bash the Dixie Chicks is quite pathetic. It’s calledd FREEDOM OF SPEECH since some people want to act as if they are such great american patrons when did the constitution state that you weren’t allowed to state your opinion in PUBLIC!? whats the damn point of freeddom of speech?? They had every right to say what they wanted! and apprently their not shutting up and singing like people told them to and im damn proud of it! their concert was great. Bush asked why they got their feelings hurt because no one is buying their cd’s and going to their concerts WHO IS HE TO GET HIS FEELINGS HURT BECAUSE SHE SAID THEY WERE ASHAMED THAT HE WAS FROM TEXAS!? and i highly dobut that their teaching their kids to hate bush i think their a little young to understand what’s going on. point is PEOPLE NEED TO GET OVER IT!

I am really glad that dixie chick won a lot of grammy last night( feb11, 2007). Keep up a good work girl. This America, you can say whatever you want.

As British troops are also dying along side US troops in Iraq I wish the ‘foreign’ emphasis on the DIXIE CHICKS backlash could be played down a bit. We also freely admit you won the American War of Independence, so isn’t it high time the American Military stopped shooting our soldiers.

  23. Glenn said:

I am from Canada, but I say cudo’s to the Dixie Chicks for standing up and fighting for what they believe in. “Freedom of Expression”. If people in America didn’t stand for what they believe in, you wouldn’t have all of the freedoms that you have and enjoy today. It comes from others that have gone before you, and taken a stand for what they believe in.

  24. Daimon said:

the reason the comment was made in another country is because THAT IS WHERE THEY WERE WHEN THE INVASION STARTED! and they are not liberals either, the problem is our “president” is NOT a conservative as he says he is. Well it’s all good because in the end the Chicks were right, the majority of Americans finally realized the war was a mistake. And they took home 5 Grammies, including the 3 biggest categories.

  25. Kristin said:

I absolutely LOVE the Dixie Chicks. They have been my ALL-TIME favorite group since I was little. It’s amazing how if she would have said the same thing NOW people would love it because there are so many people that agree with her now. People are just pissed because she was smart enough to figured out what an idiot Bush is before everyone else did. And the only people who had a problem with it were people in the south…people out in Hollywood didnt have any problem with it because people in the south are so sensitive. Im from the south and i saw it first hand. I love them even MORE than i did now because of what they said. ROCK ON DIXIE CHICKS! I LOVE YOU!!

Isn’t it interesting that the Dixie Chicks are being chastized for their comments, but has anyone checked out the latest headlines on 60 Minutes “To many in America’s armed forces, these men and women are doing the unthinkable: Active-duty soldiers, sailors and Marines speaking out against the ongoing conflict in Iraq. They’ve signed on to what’s called “An Appeal for Redress” – and they say it’s time for U.S. troops to come home”. Even the troops agree. Amazing isn’t it…. Good for you Dixie Chicks. Rock on….

Are all of you stupid? The Dixie Chicks freaking said they were ashamed the pres. was from Texas. How bad is that? Honestly. That’s not a horrible thing, they dislike president Bush people get over it! I DISLIKE PRESIDENT BUSH!!!!! There, ban me from the world, see how stupid you’ll look banning someone, the Chicks said it in public, so am I! Just because they’re famous doesn’t mean you do worse things to them.

Dixie Chicks the TRUE AMERICANS..I’m so happy they won the grammys they deserved it. They can say what ever the hell they want to and it’s stupid that people who are claiming to be “American” are mad at Natalie for speaking her mind and keepin’ it real! For those saying free speech shouldn’t be done in public needs to get a serious reality check..That statement sounds pretty UNAMERICAN and ignorant to me..what’s the point of free speech if you can’t do it in public? I’m sure those same conservatives hated a Democratic president along the line- so arn’t you just contradicting yourselves??..Don’t call us hypocrites when your no better!

Natalie makes a point there. It is sad that people are somad about something she said about the president that they make their children hate her. It’s not right and frankly, a little pathetic. I hate George Bush too, am I gonna get death threats? No. Why should she? Just because she’s famous?

It has been interesting to see the development of the whole Dixie Chicks controversy.
I am proud of our country, I wouldn’t live anywhere else, and I would die for my country. With that said I don’t like Bush and I don’t believe in the war. It hasn’t solve a thing, if anything it has just costs us millions of dollars and for what?
I support the troops and the families behind them. They are in my prayers.
I have been a fan of the Dixie Chicks, was a fan during their “lowest” moment, and I will continue to be a fan. They may be famous but I don’t think that because they are able to be heard throughout the world they should just “shut up and sing”! They, just like all American citizens, have the right to speak their mind.
Many actors, singers, etc. have expressed their feelings about the President and the war, in a negative way and their lives weren’t threaten, so why should the Dixie Chicks? I too hate Bush, he’s an idiot, and I have the freedom to say that! Will I get a death threat for saying that? No I don’t think so.
Yes they cried during the interview with Diane Sawyer, not for what they said and not like little “teen girls” but for the simple fact that they are human, and received so much crap for speaking their mind. We all have a limit on how much we can take and I believe that they reached theirs.
As far as the song, for those of you that don’t understand it,making fun of it, or judging it because you have the “freedom” to do so, I suggest you watch the documentary the Dixie Chicks made called “Shut Up and Sing”

P.S. To all of you that hate the Dixie Chicks for saying what they said and thought that their 15 minutes of fame were up…GUESS WHAT???!!! They WON 5 GRAMMY AWARDS!!! NOW WHAT???!!!!
LONG LIVE THE DIXIE CHICKS!!!! I HATE PRESIDENT BUSH…NOW BAN ME FROM THE WORLD YOU BUNCH OF IGNORANT MORANS!!!!!!!

  31. DC FAN said:

I am from Canada and even though I do not live in the US, I believe that what makes America stand out from so many other country’s, is the possibility to speak out about what you agree and disagree with, and normaly you should be able to do so without having to fear for your safety or your life. But unfortunately the Dixie Chicks paid the price for saying what so many of you are thinking today. And I would just like to point out that if they had said this about a president who had turned out to be the best thing to ever happen to the United States, which is clearly not the case, they should have also been able to do so without getting all this crap.

And to all the radio stations who stopped playing their music I say shame on you. By doing what you did you sent out a message of intolerance and I think the world could use a lot less of that. You should of said to those listeners that the Dixie Chicks are a musical group and whether they like their music or agree with their public statements or not, does not give them the right to determine if a song gets plaid on the radio or not. What about the people who like the Dixie Chicks, didn t they have the right to hear their favorite band on the radio ?

  32. lauren said:

I agree with DC Fan. The Dixie Chicks need to be played on the radio. Their music is ten times better than anything on country radio now.

  33. Jonathan said:

Long live the Dixie Chicks! Down with Bush!

I have just seen the documentary, and it is great. The hounding of (and death threats directed towards) Natalie and the others for what was simply, at the time, a casual off-the-cuff remark, is horrendous, in a country, even in the UK, we are often told is the land of freedom and democracy. It is all very saddening.

One last thing, the war in Iraq is about OIL, PROFITS and GREED, it is not about ‘war on terror’, or WMD’s, or anything else.

  34. Alex said:

I think this is Kind of pathetic.
All these people writing on this blog.
The part I find funny is that most or all of them would like to consider themselves
    “ADULTS.”
I find this funny because as a parent an adult just wants to teach their kid what is right and wrong in this world. As a child myself it kinda cracks me up because you all have nothing better to do than to talk smack about a band or a group, Who has fame and fortune. I don’t really care if you like their music or not but instead of listining to their music and talking about how much you “disagree” with it and how the music shouldn’t be played on the radio’s just shut up and turn the station. No one strapped you down into a chair and MADE you listen to it. So do the adult thing and change the station when their music is playing or change the channel on the T.V if you hear someone talking about them. Like when I’m listining to a song on the radio that I don’t like I either grin and bear it and listen to it for the full 3 minutes it’s on or I change the channel and listen to the station when I know the song is over. If you HATE their music so much why do you listen to it.

The other thing that gets me angry is that as human beings we have a RIGHT to speak our minds and what, just cause the dixie chicks are famous they all of a sudden they lose their rights. This is bull crap no matter what you think. Natalie Maines is speaking her mind about what she believes in and I think that she made a good point. Of course living in the world that we live in today you can’t say anything without someone out there being offended.

I absolutely LOVE LOVE LOVE the Dixie Chicks and I am proud that there is finally a singer out there who is willing to speak their minds, despite what it can do to their career.

FORGET ABOUT “SHUT UP AND SING” there are too many people who don’t speak their mind. So keep bringing it our way. We should all learn to take the so called “crap” that the world throws at us.

I’m very proud of the Dixie chicks and words can’t even explain it.
    Keep Speaking your mind.
Keep doing what you love to do.

    Sincerely,
    Alex
